About the Cobb, Middletown, Kelseyville, California Area
 

Cobb, originally a resort destination for the Bay Area to the many springs, includes the neighborhoods of Anderson Springs, Whispering Pines, Pine Grove, Adams Springs, Loch Lomond and Mt Hannah. Here you see the four seasons from bright greens in the spring to shades of yellow and orange in the fall, and the white snow blanket in the winter. It has a unique natural environment for Lake County with elevations up to 3000 feet above sea levels. This means that it is cooler in both summer and winter, sometimes by as much as 10 degrees from most of the other areas in Lake County. The Clear Lake Basin has an elevation of around 1400 feet above sea level. Because of the elevation you see the towering Ponderosa pine trees, which otherwise don't grow much below 2000 feet. Cobb Mt is the highest mountain in Lake County, higher than Mt Knoocti. As much as possible the forest has been left intact except where needed to create home sites and subdivisions. There are still many vacation homes and cabins in the area, but over recent decades the number of permanent homes has increased markedly. Many of the older resorts no longer operate in the same way, and have been converted into other purposes, but the area continues to hold attraction as an accessible getaway destination for those desiring to experience the beauty and power of nature. Cobb is about 35 minutes drive from Calistoga, in the north of the Napa County, and 60 minutes drive from Santa Rosa in Sonoma County. This enables access for commuters to the job opportunities in these areas. 

Middletown includes Hidden Valley Lake. Middletown is the southern gateway to Lake County and only about 18 miles from Calistoga over Mt. St Helena. The town is rather small but does have many residential ranches in the area, taking advantage of the level land with mountain views. Hidden Valley Lake is 4 miles north of Middletown and with over 3000 home sites, generally cheaper than Middletown itself, is a favored as a residential area for commuters travelling south for work.  

Kelseyville includes the three Riviera subdivisions of Clearlake Riviera, Riviera West and Riviera Heights, as well as Buckingham, Soda Bay, Konocti Bay and Jago Bay. Kelseyville township is surrounded by vineyards and pear and walnut orchards, taking advantage of the level land. The other residential areas mentioned above are closer to the lake on the lower slopes of Mt Konocti, enjoying the wonderful lakeviews that are possible.

The History of Adams Springs

These springs were first discovered by Charles Adams in 1869 at the head of Big Canyon. There were four cool springs and a swimming pool. A hotel was soon built and by 1910 the resort was able to accommodate 400 people.

There was a swimming pool.

In 1929 a new hotel was built and described in The Lake County Record-Bee as “The new hotel has a 900 foot porch, twelve foot wide, built around the entire structure, with 28 guest rooms.”

In July 1943 the hotel was destroyed by fire with one casualty-a woman who returned to retrieve her jewelry. It was never rebuilt.
